Looked After Children (LAC)

Supporting Our Looked After Children

At Bradford Alternative Provision Academy (BAPA), we understand that some children may have experienced significant challenges and changes in their lives before joining us. For our Looked After Children, these experiences may include periods in foster care, children's homes, or other circumstances where they are cared for by the local authority.

We recognise the resilience our young people show every day. At BAPA, our responsibility is to provide a safe, stable and nurturing environment where every Looked After Child feels valued, understood, and supported to achieve their very best.

Our staff work closely with carers, social workers, Virtual School teams and a range of professionals to ensure that each child receives the individualised support they need. We take time to understand their story, adapt our provision where necessary, and build strong, trusted relationships so that every pupil can re-engage positively with education.

We are proud of the progress our Looked After Children make at BAPA. Many arrive having experienced disrupted schooling or significant barriers to learning, yet with consistent care and high expectations they often flourish; improving attendance, achieving qualifications and taking important steps towards a positive future.

Looked After Children Policy

Our approach to supporting Looked After and Previously Looked After Children is set out in our Looked After and Previously Looked After Children Policy. This policy explains our responsibilities, how we work with other agencies, and how we ensure that every child receives the support they are entitled to.

Annual Looked After Children Report

Each year, BAPA produces an Annual Looked After Children Report summarising:

  • the number of Looked After Children on roll
  • their attendance, progress and achievements
  • the support and interventions provided
  • our pastoral and safeguarding work
  • case studies highlighting successes and positive outcomes
